Missing several or all of your teeth can have a tremendous negative impact on your quality of life. In addition to feeling less confident about your smile, you may also have difficulty eating or speaking properly. At Walnut Pond Dental in Annandale, NJ, Drs. Carson Ferris-Zeolla and Victoria Uryniak offer both traditional and implant-supported dentures for their patients. With years of experience in restorative and cosmetic dentistry, our doctors can help you achieve a healthy and functional smile that is also aesthetically-pleasing.

About Dentures

A denture is a custom-made prosthesis used to replace several teeth or an entire arch of missing teeth. Dentures today are natural-looking, and are usually crated from acrylic.

Types of Dentures

The type of denture necessary will depend on a number of factors, such as the number of teeth missing, budget, or the patient’s end goal. A few of the most common types of dentures include:

  • Full Traditional Dentures: Likely what you imagine when you think of dentures, the conventional variety replace an entire arch of teeth. Traditional dentures rest on the gums, and are supported by the underlying jawbone. Patients may require an upper denture, a lower denture, or both.
  • Partial Dentures: For patients who are missing several teeth, partial dentures can be used. Often, partials can be attached to adjacent teeth with metal dental clasps for additional stability.
  • Immediate Dentures: Also referred to as healing dentures, immediate dentures are temporary prostheses placed after teeth have been removed.
  • Implant-Supported Dentures: Growing in popularity, implant-supported dentures offer maximum stability. Rather than resting on the gums, implant-supported dentures are connected to dental implants. In addition to providing optimal security to your restoration, dental implants also preserve your existing jawbone and prevent bone loss in the future.

Benefits of Dentures

No matter what type you choose, dentures offer a number of advantages. These include:

  • Improved Function: Dentures restore your normal function, allowing you to eat and speak with confidence.
  • Custom Fit: Dentures are custom-fabricated for each individual for a secure, comfortable fit.
  • Natural-Looking: The high-grade materials used in dentistry today offer an incredibly lifelike appearance.
  • Increases Confidence: When you look and feel your best, it shows. Restoring your smile can give you a confidence boost and a significant increase in self-esteem.

Preparatory Procedures

Some patients may need to undergo prerequisite procedures before we fabricate their denture. Common preparatory treatments include:

  • Tooth Extractions: Any decayed or damaged teeth must be removed prior to treatment.
  • Bone Grafts: Patients who choose an implant-supported denture must have sufficient jawbone to accommodate a dental implant. If the bony ridge is too narrow, a bone grafting procedure will be required first. Bone grafts are typically not necessary for patients receiving a traditional denture.

Receiving a Denture: The Treatment Process

Whether you choose a traditional or implant-supported denture, the fabrication process is the same. Steps to craft your bridge will include:

  • Impressions: Before your denture can be made, impressions must be taken of your mouth. The impressions will be sent to our dependable dental lab.
  • Wax Model: Many doctors will request that the lab create a wax model of your new dentures. This can be tried in to assess the look and feel, and any adjustments can be relayed to the dental lab.
  • Fabrication: A skilled technician will carefully sculpt your custom denture, a process that usually takes about one to two weeks.
  • Final Adjustments: Once your denture arrives from the lab, we will see you in our office to try it in. Carefully assessing your bite, the doctor will make any necessary final adjustments.

Follow-Up Visits

After you have received your denture, it may take a few weeks to become accustomed to it. It is not uncommon to need minor adjustments as you get used to the prosthesis. We will see you for follow-up visits as needed to ensure a proper and comfortable fit.

Many Americans forgo routine dental care due to negative experiences at the dentist. We don’t want that to happen here, so we always put our patients’ experiences first. Our goal is to make sure that every person who walks through our door feels comfortable and safe in our office, so you’ll feel good about coming back. We take the time to learn about your life and your preferences, to ensure you have a great appointment, whether it’s a routine cleaning or a complex restoration.

Small, Friendly, and Family-Centered Dental Care

Corporate outsourced practices are on the rise, but we prefer to keep our neighborhood practice small, so we only have to answer to ourselves. This gives us the freedom to take the time to establish personal relationships with all our patients and help you make the best decisions for your health.

We are a fee-for-service practice, but we accept both in-network and out-of-network insurance, as well as CareCredit financing. If you have questions about the financial side of your care, please feel free to ask us questions. We will research your policy for you and help you understand your benefits and how they fit into our fee-for-service structure.

What is Patient-Centered Dentistry?

In the past, dentists treated teeth. Today, we believe that dentists treat people. We work with teeth, but our patients always come first. Just “fixing a tooth” is not as important and being partners with our patients in the service of your continued good oral health.

We certainly love to “fix teeth” but we know that every patient may have unique needs, preferences, and medical considerations. We take the time to get to know the whole person, to better serve you and help you improve the quality of your life.
