Congratulations! You have just received your new implant supported dentures. Good oral hygiene habits are critical to maintaining your new investment. Today, our Annandale, NJ dental practice shares ways to keep your implant-supported dentures in tip-top shape.

Just Like Natural Teeth

In the same way that natural teeth that require daily brushing and flossing, your implant-supported dentures must be disinfected and cleaned regularly. To do this, the prosthesis must be removed so you can easily clean your gum tissue and supporting implant posts. We recommend leaving your dentures out while you sleep, whether they are supported by implants or not. To reduce the risk of infection and other complications, remove and soak them in a cup of warm water or special denture cleaner. Please visit our office for specific directives.

Home Maintenance

We recommend brushing your implants after every meal. For those instances you cannot, rinse your mouth with lukewarm water and then brush as soon as you can. It is important to remember that the longer debris, food particles, and plaque deposits stay on your implants, the more difficult they will be to clean. We recommend using a soft-bristled toothbrush, which will not scratch or damage your prosthesis. Additionally, consider holding your brush at an angle against the implants and using small back-and-forth strokes to clean them.

While soft-bristled brushes are always recommended, power toothbrushes can also be effective. Consider brushing your implants with an electric toothbrush. Holding it over the implant for a few seconds can ensure a thorough cleaning. Ask your dentist which type of toothpaste to use, as harsh products can often cause micro-scratches on dental implants.

Flossing is also a great method for keeping implants free of food and bacteria. Be sure to ask us for some floss samples, as we have several here in our office!

Mouth rinses are great for keeping breath fresh and removing food and germs that your toothbrush or floss left behind. It is important to note that mouth rinses are not an alternative to brushing and flossing. Ask us to show you our product recommendations.
